CPSE Evaluations

HLVS is a New York State Education Department approved preschool special education evaluation site, which assesses children between the ages of two and a half years to five years old.  There is no direct cost to parents/guardians.  Funding for these evaluations is provided through Nassau and/or Suffolk County Department of Health and NYS.

Parents that have concerns regarding their child’s development in the areas of cognition, speech/language, fine and gross motor skills, sensory integration, behavior, vision or hearing should contact their school district’s Committee for Preschool Special Education (CPSE) and request an evaluation for their child.

If you choose to have your child evaluated at HLVS, the evaluations can be conducted on site at HLVS, in the child’s home or at the child’s school/daycare.

All evaluations are conducted by licensed/certified evaluators in the following areas and are kept strictly confidential:

  • Psychology
  • Speech/Language Therapy
  • Feeding Therapy
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Physical Therapy
  • Special Education
  • Social History

After the evaluation process is completed, the evaluation reports are provided to the parents and to the CPSE. A CPSE meeting will be scheduled with the parents to determine if the child is eligible for special education services.  If the child is eligible for special education services, the CPSE develops an Individualized Education Program (IEP) to meet each child’s educational and therapeutic needs.
